WHILE & OTHERWISE


Introduction to While


While is a word in English language that functions both as a noun and as a subordinating conjunction




1) A period of time.
     I waited for a while
     We played for a while.
     She took rest for a while.

2) To indicate that two separate clauses occur at the 
     same time.
      She called me while I was sleeping.
      Everyday he reads newspaper while travelling by car.
      He recorded while she was dancing. 

3) Indicating a contrast  (whereas)
     She is good at English while her brother is good at French.
     I like Hindi movies, while my brother likes English movies.
     Mostly he takes tea while I like coffee.

 Some more examples in Hindi and Telugu:

1.  We spent in a park for a while.
      हमने कुछ देर पार्क में बिताया।
   మేము కొంత సేపు ఒక పార్కులో గడిపాము.

2.   I watch TV for a while before going to bed.
      मैं बिस्तर पर जाने से पहले थोड़ी देर के लिए टीवी देखता हूं।
   నేను పడుకునే ముందు కాసేపు టీవీ చూస్తాను.

3.  He discussed with me for a while about my health.
      उन्होंने मेरे स्वास्थ्य के बारे में थोड़ी देर तक मेरे साथ चर्चा की।
   అతను నా ఆరోగ్యం గురించి కొంతసేపు  నాతో చర్చించాడు.

4.  I was sitting on the bench while they were playing.
      जब वे खेल रहे थे तो मैं बेंच पर बैठा था।
   వాళ్ళు  ఆడుతున్నప్పుడు నేను బెంచ్ మీద కూర్చున్నాను.    

5.  He got an accident while going to office.
      ऑफिस जाते समय उनका एक्सीडेंट हो गया।
   ఆఫీస్ కి  వెళ్లేటప్పుడు అతనికి ప్రమాదం జరిగింది.

6.  Be careful while crossing the road.
      सड़क पार करते समय सावधान रहें।
   రోడ్  దాటేటప్పుడు జాగ్రత్తగా ఉండండి.

7.  He got hurt while learning bicycle.
     साइकिल सीखते समय उन्हें चोट लग गई।
   సైకిల్ నేర్చుకునేటప్పుడు అతనికి దెబ్బ తగిలింది.

8.  South Indians consume rice while north Indians prefer wheat.
     दक्षिण भारतीय चावल का सेवन करते हैं जबकि उत्तर भारतीय गेहूं पसंद करते हैं।
   దక్షిణ భారతీయులు బియ్యం తినగాఉత్తర భారతీయులు గోధుమలను ఇష్టపడతారు.

9.  Some nurses are rude while some are polite.
      कुछ नर्सें असभ्य हैं जबकि कुछ विनम्र हैं।
   కొందరు నర్సులు కఠినంగా మాట్లాడతారు , మరికొందరు మర్యాదగా మాట్లాడతారు. 

10. Few girls are bold while many are timid.
       कुछ लड़कियां बोल्ड होती हैं जबकि कई डरपोक होती हैं।
   కొంతమంది  అమ్మాయిలు  ధైర్యంగా ఉంటేచాలామంది పిరికిగా వుంటారు. 
       
    
Conjunctions - While and Otherwise
                               WHILE

Audience applauded while he was giving speech.


Stephen prayed for them while he was being killed by them.


                          OTHERWISE

I keep everything ready before I start, otherwise I forget.


He played well, otherwise India would have defeated. 


She saved the boy, otherwise he would have fallen in the well.

Introduction to 'Otherwise'


'Otherwise' is used in circumstances different from those present
(it gives meaning of 'or else' or 'if not')

Take umbrella and go, otherwise you will drench in the rain.
Keep this money with you, otherwise you will suffer a lot.
Walk slowly on the wet land, otherwise you will slip.

1.  I have to hurry up, otherwise I will be late.
    मुझे जल्दी करना होगानहीं तो मुझे देर हो जाएगी।
   నేను త్వరపడాలి , లేకపోతే నాకు లేట్ అవుతుంది.  

 2.  We shall go to her house: otherwise she'll get upset.
      हम उसके घर जाएंगे: अन्यथा वह परेशान हो जाएगी।
      మేము ఆమె ఇంటికి వెళ్తాము: లేకపోతే ఆమె బాధపడుతుంది.      

3.  Remind me; otherwise, I will forget.
      मुझे याद दिलाओनहीं तो मैं भूल जाऊंगा।
      నాకు గుర్తు చేయండి; లేకపోతే, నేను మరచిపోతాను.

4.  Eat something; otherwise you will feel hungry.
     कुछ खा लोअन्यथा आपको भूख लगेगी।
     ఏదైనా తినండి; లేకపోతే మీకు ఆకలి అవుతుంది .   

5.  She requested me; otherwise I was not interested to go.
      उसने मुझसे निवेदन कियाअन्यथा मुझे जाने का शौक नहीं था।
      ఆమె నన్నుబ్రతిమాలాడింది ; లేకపోతే నాకు  వెళ్ళడము   ఇష్టంలేదు. 

6.  You have to study hard for the exam; otherwise you will fail.
      आपको परीक्षा के लिए कड़ी मेहनत करनी होगीअन्यथा आप असफल होंगे।
      మీరు  పరీక్ష కోసం కష్టపడి చదవాలి; లేకపోతే ఫెయిల్ అవుతారు

7.  Salt is less; otherwise curry is delicious.
     नमक कम हैअन्यथा करी स्वादिष्ट है।
     ఉప్పు తక్కువైంది అంతే లేకపోతే కూర రుచిగ వుంది

8.  Remember the way; otherwise you will miss the way.
      रास्ता याद रखनाअन्यथा आप रास्ता भूल जाएंगे।
      దారి గుర్తుంచుకో; లేకపోతే దారితప్పిపోతావు. 

9. Take rest, otherwise tomorrow you cannot work.
     आराम करेंअन्यथा कल आप काम नहीं कर सकते।
     రెస్ట్ తీసుకోండి, లేకపోతే రేపు మీరు పని చేయలేరు.     

10. Explain her clearly, otherwise she can't understand.  
      उसे स्पष्ट रूप से समझाएंअन्यथा वह समझ नहीं सकती।  
     ఆమెకు వివరంగా చెప్పండి, లేకపోతే ఆమెకు అర్థం కాదు.                                                                              

       
                                                          CONVERSATION
Conversation on 'while' and 'otherwise'
Conversation (Father and Son)

Father:   Bobby, don't you have school?

Bobby:  No, today is a holiday. We have no school.

Father:  Did you finish your home work?

Bobby:   I finished while you were washing your car.

Father:   Not just finishing home work, you have to study; otherwise you will 
                 not get good marks. You should not play.

Bobby:   I will study in the evening. My teacher said, "Children should play
                for sometime, otherwise they cannot be active."
                Mum also told me to play while she was going out.

Father:    O.k, but play some nice games like cricket or foot ball. 
                 Don't play with toys like girls. 

Bobby:     I play those games while I am with my friends. Some boys 
               like to play cricket while some like to play foot ball. 
               I play with both the groups otherwise  I cannot practice playing
               those games.

Father:   Do you have school tomorrow?

Bobby:   Why not? I have.

Father:    Keep everything ready your note books, text books, pencils, 
               eraser, uniform, tie, badge, belt and whatever necessary, 
               otherwise you will get late.

Bobby:   Dad, I know, every day before going to bed I do that.

Father:    O.k. be careful I am leaving.
